I wanted to thank all those YouTube channels out there like Sailing La Vagabonde<\/a>, Sailing Project Atticus<\/a>, Finding Avalon<\/a>, GoSea Sailing<\/a>, Sailing Zatara<\/a>, Lazy Gecko Sailing & Adventures<\/a>, Free Range Sailing<\/a>, MJ Sailing<\/a>, Sailing Doodles<\/a>, and Gone with the Wynns<\/a> to just name a few. There are many more like Sailing SV Delos<\/a>, Tula’s Endless Summer<\/a>, Sailing Soulianis<\/a>, Sailing into FREEDOM<\/a>, and Sailing Ruby Rose<\/a>; just too many to list and many great channels. These people lead by example as to what can be done by following your heart and your dreams. Sailing keeping dreams alive. Anyone can do it and achieve anything they set their mind to. The challenge is figuring out how to incorporate your dreams and your heart into your life’s purpose. These video channels have a variety of life, DIY and information presented in a variety of ways to capture your interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, when I was a kid, I lived near the ocean and spent many family vacation times swimming in the ocean, building sand castles, and beach walking (not to mention beach bomb-fires). There were so many boats and sailboats that I started to dream what it would be like to sail under the wind. How could I circumnavigate<\/a> the globe? I never really had the opportunity and I never really got a chance to talk about it with my family in any great detail, no real reason. I was always busy with hockey, baseball, skiing, motorcycling, tobogganing, camping and many other outdoor sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also started watching Jaques Cousteau<\/a> with my dad as a kid and I was fascinated with marine life. I started thinking about being a marine biologist, going to school in Miami, but life had different plans for me. My folks moved out to central Canada, and I spent the next 20 years nowhere near the sea. The closest I got was becoming an aquarium salt-water reef enthusiast. The Internet was born and I got taken into it, and my career path sent me along all kinds of electronic and computer science programming in the telecommunications space. I got married. I started a business and helped raise 3 kids. They are all amazing people and I am forever grateful to have any time I can get to spend with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But my own dreams seemed to take a back seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I was 45 I was given some bad news from my doc, my indulgences in life were really taking me in the wrong direction, I wasn’t going to make it to 50 I was told if I carried on as I was. God, what happened?<\/em> This really threw me a loop, and I spent a lot of time reflecting and realizing that I wasn’t focusing on the right things to balance out my life, more family and less work, be healthy, including my own personal dreams. I wanted to spend more time with my family, to try and get back in shape, eat healthier and try and reverse the damage I had done to my body, mind and spirit. Striving for a balanced life I needed to get some of my own personal dreams going. I’m also running out of time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don’t really have an explanation for not going into the marine field for my career aside from the fact that I know I should have. I should have followed my heart and dreams instead of doing what people recommended to me; and gotten into the marine field, and gotten my career expertise there. My only advice here is follow your dreams. Pay and monetary renumeration will come if you plan and work towards them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So why the long explanation?<\/em><\/strong> I know my family at times thinks I’m a little crazy, and definitely a little driven, but I also think that over time they will all come to understand and love what I am trying to do, to live out a more balanced life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I decided in 2014 to change my life’s direction. I’m not going to go into all the family, health and spiritual directions, but this blog post is related to starting to focus on sailing which is one of my personal dreams, to sail and visit far away lands, warm beaches and eventually a circumnavigation. How to get sailing keeping dreams alive? I don’t have any fully concrete plans yet aside from starting the journey in parts. I don’t need a full-on dedicated journey, this can take years, I’m not in a rush. How? In my past, I had done engine conversions, many mechanical jerry-rigging on my vehicles so I knew I had a decent background and felt I should get something broken and fix it so I know and learn it inside out. I don’t want to be out in a strange place and not understand how to fix the boat. Maybe my past gave me enough skills and confidence to tackle a project like this. I also wanted to double check that I really did want to sail, and refresh my sailing knowledge. I need to start by owning and renovating a boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 30 years ago, I learned how to sail on my uncles boat and I had been out on a number of boats through the years. I was a bit rusty though on my sailing skills, so I decided to buy a catamaran. I bought a 1984 Mystere S 17′ fiberglass catamaran and trailer. It wasn’t in great shape, spent $300 on it and it leaked. It did float enough to sail it, and I fixed it up, learned how to fiberglass and painted the hulls. I restored it, cleaned the sails, changed out all the ropes, halyard and started trucking it to the beach to refresh my sailing skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I remember that first launch. Man was I nervous, I had watched so many videos of catamarans flipping. I stuck with it, got it out and was amazed how fast that cat would sail. Without much sail tweaking knowledge I had that cat doing 13 knots! After getting out on Lake Ontario over a few years at least 50 times in all kinds of weather, all I can affirm is that calm weather isn’t when you learn how to sail. When you are pressing the edge, and slightly uncomfortable, a knot in your stomach, that is when you really start to know and learn how to sail your boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The start of the journey.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I was certainly affirming that sailing was a core interest of mine and all my goals and dreams from my youth became alive. I knew that I was ready to start looking for a bigger boat. My budget being somewhat limited, I started looking for a fixer upper, and after a year and a half of visiting marinas and asking about abandoned boats, scouring over the classifieds and Internet sites I finally came across a boat listed online in Grand Bend, a 1975 Hughes 35\/1500 North Star hull #017. I started my journey<\/a> that day by driving 3 hours, and buying a boat with a dead engine, no working electronics but it just was one of those things that I knew with some love and attention would become the swan. I prayed to God, consulted with my wife and was encouraged to go for it. I ended up selling my catamaran for more than I paid for Northern Comfort. I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder isn’t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In season one, my son and I got the hull and engine repaired and launched the boat mid-summer. I am so impressed with him and grateful to get to spend time with him getting us off the ground and into the water. I also figured out what was wrong with the engine, a blown head gasket and no water lift muffler. I replaced the parts and got that engine running very smoothly. I started solo sailing to get the rust out, necessary skills required to get into and out of dock, with this 35′ sailboat. I also solo sailed from Hamilton to Port Whitby, over 100 nautical miles and picked up my family there for a family vacation on the boat. I am starting to realize that there is just something unique about sailing, boat and marine life and it’s driving me to the sea. I don’t have my finger on it yet but I know I’m getting in the right direction. We learned a lot together and started to link a few goals together, spending more time with family, being outdoors, getting healthier and moving slowly towards my goal of starting to cruise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what’s in store for the upcoming seasons? Wanting to go green I engaged Golden Motor<\/a> and started a gas to electric motor conversion. Actually having working Raymarine<\/a> gauges will be a huge improvement. A cabin gutting. Modernization. Of course, going green means solar power, wind power and batteries. I’m not striving for perfection, just solid, safe and the base for a successful journey. Wow, what a learning curve and I’ll be sharing all of it here in my blog post sailing keeping dreams alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
