Winter Rundown, Cabin Demolition and Covering Up

From November 6 to 16, 2019, our boat was hauled out and put onto the hard. In order to get ready for winter, my Dad came down to Hamilton to help put together a cover to protect against the winter cold, wind and rain while we do our winter projects including an electric engine conversion and complete cabin gutting.

In this video, I gave a brief project overview which includes removing the Universal Atomic 4 gasoline engine and putting in an electric 10KW motor. This electric engine conversion required an electrical overhaul and removal of the fuel take, lines pump and engine.

To get the gas tanks out I had to tear out a lot of the cabin starboard side, and in doing so, some cabin sole rot was exposed. This rot was a combination of oil leaks and water from lack of covering in the winters. Further inspection revealed that the floors were water saturated. the floors were originally 3/4 plywood and covered with fiberglass, but not on the bottom for some reason. So after years of water being in the bilge, water seeped up into the wood and they were mush.

After reflection, and a do-it-right DIY mentality, the demolition began. Some research into various boat design had me leaning towards the Beneteau 38 foot sailboat https://www.beneteau.com/us/oceanis/oceanis-381 (beautiful water crafts) and I modelled the interior future layout off of the design. I am going to complete the finish in a white modern bright Interlux topcoat with wood trimming as opposed to the over-powering wood look. But that is the future. Right now, there’s a cabin to gut, bulkheads to remove and relocate.

DIY handcrafted layout coming in future episodes and a complete electric 10KW motor conversion https://www.goldenmotor.com/frame-bldcmotor.htm and Vector Controller. This is going to be a complete custom fit. I knew I was undertaking a lot when the marina staff explained, ‘Man you’re starting over!’ after helping remove the engine….
